Sarah Palin resigns as Governor of Alaska
Rio de Janeiro News.Net Friday 3rd July, 2009
Politics in Washington picked up a beat Friday, when former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin suddenly announced her resignation as Alaskan governor.
Palin said she will step down in three weeks on July 26 and hand over to Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell.
"I have never believed that I nor anyone else needs a title to do this, to make a difference, to help people. So I choose for my state, and for my family, more freedom to progress, all the way around. So that Alaska may progress, I will not seek re-election as governor," Palin told a press conference in the small town of Wasilla, Alaska.
She did not say what her intentions were from hereon, but speculation was mounting Friday she was preparing a bid for the presidency in 2012.
Her husband Todd told the Fox News Channel his wife would now concentrate on "doing the things for Alaska and the country" that she is passionate about and cannot do as governor with the limitation and constant opposition she deals with within the state.
Governor Palin is the first woman, and the youngest person, to have served as governor of Alaska.
