Russia slaps curbs on meat imports from US, Brazil

Rio de Janeiro News.Net
Wednesday 8th September, 2010

Russia has imposed restrictions on meat imports from seven plants in four countries, including Brazil and the US, starting Wednesday over safety concerns.

Rosselkhoznadzor, the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance, has introduced the restrictions on meat supplies for four Brazilian companies and one each from the US, Argentina and Poland. Two more Brazilian meat suppliers will be put into Russia's blacklist starting Sep 14.

Tougher sanitary regulations regarding poultry processing that restrict the use of chlorine and moisture content came into force in Russia Jan 1.

In August, Russia lifted a ban on poultry imports from 72 US plants whose production processes met Russian requirements, leaving a ban in place for just five companies.
