SAO PAULO, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- A late goal from attacking midfielder Nikao handed Sao Paulo a 1-0 home victory over Ceara in the first leg of their all-Brazilian Copa Sudamericana quarterfinal on Wednesday.

Nikao broke the deadlock in the 70th minute when he received a pass from Igor Vinicius and cut inside his marker before lashing a low left-footed effort past goalkeeper Joao Ricardo.

Argentine striker Jonathan Calleri squandered a chance to give the hosts a 2-0 lead when he missed a penalty attempt eight minutes from time.

But Sao Paulo controlled possession thereafter to edge closer to the last four of South American football's equivalent of the Europa League.

The return leg will be played at the Castelao stadium in Fortaleza next Wednesday.
