Brazil's Lula undergoes surgery to remove scalp lesion

SAO PAULO, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva underwent surgery Friday to remove a lesion on his scalp, his medical team said.

The procedure, performed at the Sirio-Libanes Hospital in Sao Paulo, was completed without complications. The 80-year-old president was discharged later in the day, his doctor Roberto Kalil Filho said.

Surgeon Cristina Abdalla said that the lesion, a type of skin cancer related to sun exposure, is not prone to spreading to other parts of the body.

Lula also received treatment for tendinitis in his right hand during the visit.

Kalil said the president is expected to rest in the coming days, but his schedule, including his reelection campaign ahead of the October elections, will not be affected.
